Details On 2017 Acura NSX Come Out As Release Date Nears

The Acura NSC represents the new-age supercar.

When Acura unveiled the next-generation NSX at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, there was no shortage of buzz in the room. Before the car was rolled out, there as a montage that included F1 legend Ayrton Senna driving one of the first NSX’s on the track. Now, several months later, we are starting to get some of the specs and a timeline for the vehicle’s release. And it’s safe to say that the excitement for the super car is still at a pretty fevered pitch.

2017 Acura NSX Release Date

There is demand for the car now, but enthusiasts may have to wait a little longer than they wanted to actually get their hands on it. The 2017 Acura NSX release date appears to be pushing well into 2016, as production doesn’t actually begin until next spring. This would put the dealership arrival date of the new NSX easily around third or fourth quarter 2016 in our estimation. But just because we can’t have the car yet doesn’t mean that we can’t marvel at the specs that have been released, right? Let’s take a look.

The engine is a 3.5-liter that will have output of 500 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. But the hybrid system can actually boost the performance numbers. Acura calls it the Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, and with it engaged, the car can achieve output of 573 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 time that is being thrown out there with this mode is 3.0 seconds, with a top speed of 191 mph.

It may seem confusing that a hybrid system increases the car’s power, because the term hybrid is usually used exclusively in reference to fuel savings. But with the NSX, the hybrid system involves three electric motors that work in conjunction with the engine to drive the rear wheels. It also helps the car brake and helps improve the car’s shift quality.

As for how the car will handle with all that power, Acura has given this much attention. The fully independent front and rear suspension has magnetic dampers on all four corners. In addition to getting help in braking from the electric motors, the car will also be equipped with Brembo ventilated steel disc brakes with six-piston calipers in front and four-piston calipers in the rear.

The car will need a good braking system, because unfortunately it is pretty heavy for the segment at 3,803 lbs. The 42/58 weight distribution should help, but the overall curb weight of the car is somewhat disappointing.

In the end, the 2017 Acura NSX is going to be a pretty impressive supercar, especially if the weight is the only detractor. Unless you also consider the $170K price tag to be an issue… Yeah, there is that.
