Lucky Putt Wins A New Toyota…Almost

There’s no question that Patrick Burch is a lucky guy. The dude was attending his first Auburn Tigers basketball game when he was picked out of the crowd to play a contest. Already pretty lucky. But that alone wouldn’t be very newsworthy. The reason it is getting press is that he made a 95-foot putt from one end of the court to the next and won a new Toyota from a local dealership – kind of.

The problem with this story is the fine print. While Lynch Toyota advertised the promotion as “sinking a putt and winning an new car,” it isn’t quite that easy. The deal allows him $15,000 toward the purchase of a new car. But, according to their website, the cheapest new car on the lot is a Toyota Yaris for $17,233. So while it’s still generous, the college student is going to have to pay over $2,000 to get a car out of the deal. And anyone that’s been or is in college knows they didn’t or don’t have that kind of money lying around.

Hopefully he can just take the cash and get some benefit out of his lucky putt. After all, the above scenario is for a Yaris. So to drive something that doesn’t suck, he’s going to have to shell out a lot more than two-grand.

By the way, could the announcers be any less excited in the video below? The guy just put a golf ball through a hole barely larger than the ball itself. A little enthusiasm would be appreciated. Take a cue from Patrick – he hugged the Tiger.
