Resurrected Ford GT Equipped With Most Powerful Production EcoBoost Engine Ever
The decade-long hiatus of the Acura NSX has come to fruition at the Detroit Auto Show, and while the three-motor Sport Hybrid Supercar was one of the most anticipated models to be unveiled, Ford also pulled a couple of sheets off and proved that they are not planning to skimp on the more than 12 performance vehicles that were promised by 2020.
It’s a claim backed exclusively by the all-new Ford GT.
Much like the NSX, the GT disappeared from the market roughly 10 years ago, but to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first, second and third place finishes of Ford GT race cars at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, they decided to add it to the list of the dozen new models.
The GT received its Motor City debut alongside a few other models, including the Focus RS, F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R, but it undoubtedly commanded the majority of the spotlight.
Much like the NSX, the all-new GT equips a mid-mounted engine that sets up shop behind the pair of sport seats. The biggest difference between the two, however, is that while Acura’s supercar takes on a triple threat of motors, the GT only requires a single source of power, and surprisingly, it’s able to do more with less.
Exact numbers have yet to be announced, but the Blue Oval claims that the GT will generate “more than 600 horsepower,” which, if true, will place it above the 550-horsepower NSX. This is a GT we’re talking about here, so unlike the proposed 200-mile Chevy Bolt EV, we have no troubles believing that Ford will far surpass 600 horse.

Perhaps the most mind-boggling thing about the powertrain of the GT is that it only employs six cylinders. It is an EcoBoost engine and therefore comes turbocharged, but even so, a standalone V6 with that high of an output is undoubtedly impressive. The supercar serves as a testament to the success that has been EcoBoost technology, and has us pretty excited about the other performance vehicles that will be rolling out over the next couple of years.
The most powerful production EcoBoost engine ever manufactured will likely be getting tweaked over the next couple of months, with production of the GT beginning next year. No word on an official release date from the automaker, but if they get things started early on, we could see the resurrected supercar hitting the streets and dominating the tracks by the end of 2016.
Before that, however, we should know exactly how much more than 600 horsepower the anticipated EcoBoost V6 will get.
