Crew Begins Meticulous Corvette Resurrections
A few weeks ago, earth consumed eight Corvettes at the National Corvette Museum, and now crews are working on pulling the classic cars out of the belly of the sinkhole.
The crew is working as meticulously as archaeologists excavating a dinosaur skeleton. It’s clear that they’re trying to keep from further damaging the cars, but there are also concerns about unintentionally expanding the sinkhole.
The 1993 “Ruby Red” 40th Anniversary Corvette is removed.
So far only two of the eight vehicles have been extracted. The first to be removed was the 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil, which surprisingly fired right up. Although it left a trail of oil behind it, the Blue Devil made it out the door without any assistance. A few hours later, the crew pulled the 1993 “Ruby Red” 40th Anniversary Corvette out.
The extraction of the 1962 Black Corvette is slotted for tomorrow, but the other five cars won’t be removed until the sinkhole is stabilized. The timeline on that is rough, but a spokesperson at the museum said that it could take up to three weeks before the rest of the vehicles are cleared for liftoff.
Not surprisingly, a large number of people have expressed interest in seeing the vehicles in their destroyed state, so as soon as the vehicles are excavated, they will be put on display until the end of July. When the exhibit comes to a close, all eight of the vehicles will be sent off to Michigan where they will be restored to their original state.
It’s likely that the National Corvette Museum will also be filling in the sinkhole and restructuring the building to keep earth from chewing up any more of the classic cars. After everything is back to normal, the museum plans to add a display with information about the sinkhole and the extraction of the vehicles.
I’m pretty sure that once everything is said and done, the museum’s only concern will be keeping Richie Incognito from stepping foot in the museum and turning the cars into “pieces of art.”
