The Most Exciting Part Of The Last NASCAR Race Involved The Pace Car
If you happened to catch the Sprint Unlimited last night (which you didn’t unless you have Fox Sports 1), then you witnessed a mildly entertaining race. But the most exciting part was absolutely when the pace car started on fire. Yes, the car that sets the pace – a street version of the Chevy SS – caught fire and had to be extinguished.
The reason for the fire is believed to be the battery unit in the trunk that is needed to power some of the auxiliary lights and other gadgets. But either way, it doesn’t look great for Chevy when the car they pick to use for the pace car can’t finish the race. Then a Toyota wins the race – so it was an all-out loss for Chevrolet on the night. I mean, I could understand if the pace car was a Tesla…
This follows other odd (and dangerous) recent activity at Daytona. It would be impossible for any racing fan to forget when Juan Pablo Montoya’s car slammed into the jet drier causing an explosion and nearly cancelling the Daytona 500 two years ago. And just last year during the Nationwide race, a last-lap crash caused a tire, engine and other car parts to enter the stands, injuring several fans.
It seems whether you are driving one of the race cars, jet drier, pace car – or just a fan in attendance, your safety is at risk lately at Daytona.
